Matthew chapter 6 verses 1 to 4 begins by Jesus teaching his disciples on giving. It’s a warning. He tells them not to be like the hypocrites, they sound like a trumpet when they give alms (charitable gifts), pray or fast. They do it for recognition to be honored.
“Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:1)
We want God to be glorified in our lives, we give to the poor because it is a command we prayer because the bible says, “And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;” (Luke 18:1) another scripture tells us, “Pray without ceasing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:17) So we pray, we give because it pleases God, and we are obeying his word.
Jesus was also showing them not to look to man for praise and affirmation. Our reward comes from God and if we obey Him he will reward us. “But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.” (Matthew 6:3-4)
The Lords’s Prayer in Matthew chapter six has been recited hundreds of thousands of times, in church serves, funerals, religious events and the list goes on. But what is the Lord’s prayer saying to us? What is the real meaning behind it?
“And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.” (Luke 11:1)
This month our study in prayer explores the Lord's Prayer do we just o quote it word for word or is
